Building upon the success of the last six years, the seventh annual ToxTalks Symposium is a one-day event hosted by Simon Fraser University (SFU) Faculty of Science and Health Science graduate students. The symposium focuses on research in the interdisciplinary field of drugs, carcinogens and pollutants and their effects on humans and in the environment. This is an opportunity for interested undergraduate and graduate students from across British Columbia (and beyond!) to attend, present their research, and network with other students, researchers, or industry members engaged in similar fields. ToxTalks features oral and poster presentations, a keynote speaker, and an evening social event. Whether students are completing undergraduate projects, beginning their graduate studies and looking for feedback on research proposals, are about to graduate, or are simply interested in the growing field of toxicology, this event is tailored for students at every stage in their academic career. We welcome students from a broad range of disciplines, from cellular and molecular scales, to human-population epidemiological studies, to global ecosystem scales, and everything in between. Interested faculty, staff, and other external environmental toxicology and human health professional community members are also invited to meet and chat with students, and to learn about graduate research happening in this part of the world.

Keynote Speaker
Previous keynotes have included Beth Power a partner from Azimuth Consulting Ltd, Dr. Jennie Christensen founder of Trichanylytics, Dr. Peter Ross from the Vancouver aquarium and the Ocean Wise Initiative, our own Dr. Vicki Marlatt from SFU, Dr. Adrian deBruyn from Golder Associates Ltd, and the late Dr. Peter Chapman, one of the founding fathers of modern toxicology. We are excited to welcome Anne-Marie Nicol to the ToxTalks stage. Anne-Marie Nicol is an Associate Professor in SFU's Faculty of Health Sciences and a Co-Principal Investigator for CAREX. She has expertise in health communication, citizen science, toxicology, social marketing, risk
perception, and risk assessment through her work with numerous agencies, Centres, Universities, and organizations. Anne-Marie’s research includes both qualitative and quantitative methods and is often intervention based, focusing on how environmental and occupational exposures impact human health. She has designed a number of innovative public and occupational health awareness campaigns including Wash with Care, a Bollywood themed pesticide exposure program and the Tick Talk, a multi-lingual tick education program for children on ticks. At CAREX, Canada’s only national carcinogen surveillance program, Anne-Marie’s focus is on translating knowledge about occupational and environmental carcinogens to policy makers and cancer prevention stakeholders across the country.
